Veysel Karani

Yemen 594 - Syria 657

Known as Veysel Karani in Anatolian folk culture, Üveys el-Karani was born in the Karen village of Yemen around 594 AD. According to the stories, Veysel Karani was a believer who made a living by herding camels, collecting and selling date seeds, and taking care of his old mother. Veysel Karani's real life and legendary personality are mixed together in various sources throughout the ages.

He had a character that did not care about worldly blessings and had an intense motherly love. He probably accepted Islam through Muslims who went to Yemen to spread Islam. He was devoted to Islam and Prophet Muhammad. He taught his mother the Quran himself. Despite his desire to go to Medina and visit the Prophet, he could not leave his elderly and blind mother. But later he got permission from his mother for a short time and came to Medina, but since he could not find the Prophet at home that day, he could not meet Him and had to return to Yemen.

After the death of the Prophet, Hz. Ali and Hz. Omer found Üveys and they gave him the Holy Mantle as per the will of Prophet Muhammad. After the Prophet's cloak is given to Karani and the Prophet's praises about him are heard, Veysel Karani's value in the eyes of the people increased and everyone respected him.

It is believed that Veysel Karani participated in the Battle of Sfin (near the city of Raqqa in today's Syria) in 657 on the side of Hz. Ali and was martyred in this battle. The place where Veysel is buried is not known for sure. Considering that Veysel died in the Battle of Sfin, it is highly probable that his real grave is in the city of Raqqa, Syria. There are also tombs and shrines in his name in Yemen, Iran, Uzbekistan, Syria and various parts of Anatolia. His most famous place in Turkey is near the Baykan district on the Siirt - Diyarbakir highway. The tomb is visited by hundreds of thousands of Muslims from all over the world every year, and it is known as "Ziyaret" (meaning "Visit" in Turkish) by the locals. The foundation of the Veysel Karani Tomb was laid in the Seljuk period, and later underwent various repairs during the Republican period.
