Despite Turkey's long coastline and large freshwater bodies, fishing is an underdeveloped industry compared to other sectors. As of 2024, the annual catch is 356.070 tons for the sea fish and around 577.124 from aquaculture. The Black Sea, Sea of Marmara, Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean constitute the main fishing grounds. After 1990's, the fish farms and aquaculture were supported by the State and their numbers have grown. Today, Frogs' legs, snails, shrimp, and crayfish are some of the sea products exported. Fishery production in 2024 reached 933.194 tons in total. The exports of fishery products brought over USD 2 billion into the country with over 270 thousand tons. Meanwhile imports are a little over 100 thousand tons, with a worth of USD 280 million paid.
As for the fish consumption, Turkey is also behind the world average: Turkish people eat 7,2 kilograms (16 pounds) of fish per capita per year, meanwhile the world average is around 22 kilograms and the EU average is around 25 kilograms per person.
