Ahmed II was the 21st sultan of the Ottoman Empire. He was born in Istanbul in 1643. His father was Ibrahim I and his mother was Hatice Muazzez Sultan. He succeeded his brother Suleyman II in 1691 at the age of 49 and reigned until his death in Edirne in 1695. His body was brought to Istanbul and buried in the tomb of Suleyman the Magnificent.
When Ahmed II ascended to the throne, the Ottoman-Austrian wars were ongoing and more territory was being lost. During this period, Maltese and Papal ships invaded the island of Chios in 1695. During Ahmed II's short reign, the fires in Istanbul caused a large part of the city to burn down completely.
Sultan Ahmed II, who had a sensitive and fierce temperament, was very interested in poetry and music and was also a calligrapher. He had a very good writing ability and wrote many Qurans. He knew Arabic and Persian. The sultan followed state affairs very closely and attended the council (Divan) meetings even when he was ill.
After Ahmed II died in 1695 at the age of 52, Mustafa II, son of Mehmed IV, ascended to the throne.
