Gokova Gulf

Lying on the south coast of Bodrum peninsula and on the north of Datca peninsula, in the province of Mugla, the Gulf of Gökova is a fascinating corner of Turkey offering lovely views with charming combinations of colors. Pretty shorelines covered with forests offer every tone of green, while the Aegean Sea has a wide range of blues. The mountains shelter the setting sun under hues of red and yellow. If you would like to witness all these beauties, there are opportunities to sail along these coastlines, and a boat trip on this gulf will make your holiday as beautiful as the place itself.

Today Gokova Gulf is a very popular destination for the Blue Cruise, many Gulet and bareboat charters, as well as private yachts, sail and anchor in many small bays within the gulf. Some of the major towns in the gulf are Gokova town, Akyaka, and Ula. Akyaka town is recently rewarded as a "Slow City", one of the few in Turkey. There are few archaeological ruins around the Gulf, such as Ceramus near Oren town and Cedrae in Sedir island.

Sedir island, known as Cleopatra Island, is a popular stop for tourist coming to visit its world famous fine beach made of extremely tiny seashells. It's said that this organic sand was brought by ships from the Red Sea in Egypt by Antonius for his love Cleopatra and that they swam together here. Because of its characteristics and being one of the finest examples in the world, the beach is heavily protected by the government to prevent any sand being removed by visitors.
